It’s time to #MeetWilden! Meet Wilden Team Member, Karen Barnstable.
1. How and when did you first get involved with Wilden and what is your role?
My family and I moved to Kelowna in 2006 and built our first home in the Hidden Lake area. I loved Wilden from day one! To add to my work in Education, I worked part-time at the Rykon Showhome for many years. I was delighted to join the Wilden team in January 2024 at Pondside Landing Townhomes, showing visitors the stunning homes that are available.
2. What are some of your favourite things about working with Wilden?
Since I am a resident in Wilden, I can ride my bike or simply drive down the hill to work. I know all the paths and trails in the neighbourhood and can share with people some of the treasures I have enjoyed during my 18 years of living here. All the members of the Wilden team are a pleasure to work with, showing consideration in all employee decisions.
3. If you were an animal living in Wilden, which one would you be?
Being a turtle in Clear Pond would be the ideal life. I could spend my days soaking up the sun on a log with my friends. We would be surrounded by nature in a peaceful and serene environment. The only interruptions might be the walkers along the path next to the pond, or the residents of the Elderberry townhomes admiring us from their decks.
4. If you were to build your dream house in Wilden, what are some must-haves you would include?
Our current home that we built in Wilden eight years ago offers some features that are irreplaceable. We have stunning views of the valley from the airport to the lake with huge windows to take in the views from many angles. A covered deck provides us with an outdoor room that can be enjoyed all year long.
5. What are some of your favourite ways to relax and play in the Okanagan?
We don’t have to travel far on a hot summer afternoon to find ways to cool off. All we have to do is grab a few towels, our floaties and a paddle board and head to beach. The biggest decision is . . . hmm, which beach should we choose? We can go to the Pandosy area and pick one of the many great beaches along Okanagan Lake or head to Lake Country and enjoy the beach at Wood Lake or Kalamalka Lake. Each one has its’ unique appeal.
6. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Most people that meet me at the Showhome do not know that I am a semi-retired professor and an author. I taught courses at Okanagan College for 10 years and worked as a Faculty Advisor for UBC Okanagan School of Education for many years. I have published a memoir entitled “Seeking Silver” and a children’s book called “Winston Wonders.” I still teach online courses on writing a memoir with the University of Victoria.
7. What is Kelowna’s best kept secret?
I think the secret is out, but Kelowna is an incredible place to live. Our weather blesses us with a quality lifestyle throughout the year. Our traffic has certainly increased over the years, but you can still get most places in fifteen to twenty minutes. Living in Wilden allows you the chance to get downtown or to the airport in ten minutes.
8. What are some of your favourite local Kelowna businesses you like to support and more people need to know about?
Brandt’s Creek Pub is one of our favourite spots. The huge patio has windows that open up to take in the outdoor air and fresh breezes. The menu is extensive offering casual choices to high end entrees. The staff is super friendly and make you feel welcome every time.
9. If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
This seems a bit counter-productive, but I think I would take more naps.
10. If you weren’t living in the beautiful Okanagan, where else would you live?
My husband says that if a giant wind blew everyone out of Kelowna, I’d still be here clinging to a tree. There is no where else I want to live.
